Our Club

We are the Sudden Impact Paddling Club, as one of the first mixed teams to emerge in 2001 as part of the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club. Cultus Lake is our incredible home and it is paradise! These waters provide nearly ever kind of condition we might encounter in the 6-7 regattas we compete in during the dragon boat season, making it the perfect training location!

In our nine year history we have certainly established a reputation!! Part of what we are about is social! Friendships are forged during our months of training and have endured for years. We have seen team members marry, start families, celebrate birthdays, nab new jobs, change residences, have children graduate from school and embrace retirement with a vengeance. Through it all, we have been there for each other, ready to raise a glass or hold a party, or a roast! We have a way of keeping our history alive and a story is never far away about our road trips, carpool adventures, hotel hi-jinx, the races we won and the ones that we did not by the closest of margins! (1/100th of a second matters in dragon boat racing!)

It is definitely also about the racing! We have a reputation for fun but we also have an equal reputation for being fierce competitors at regattas. Last season saw our teams walk away with hardware at nearly every event where we were participants. The twice/three a week practices, the hard work, the time in the gym all become worth it on race day when we have to lay it on the line. There is nothing more amazing than flying down a 500 metre race course, heart pounding in your chest, with five or six or eight other boats, separated by mere inches! The only way you will win is by sheer heart and the determination to dig deep to be the first over the line! We love it! We are hoping to build on the success of previous years with help from our two new coaches and a renewed commitment to excellence and hard work.
